Entrance Gates (1878)

1878 saw the arrival of a set of cast-iron gates from England. The gates were manufactured by the Coalbrookdale Company in the West Midlands.

Even by Victorian standards they are imposing in height and solidity. The coat of arms of the Royal Society decorates the top of the paired main gates. There is a smaller pedestrian entrance and a much more recent and simpler iron fence flanks either side.
