The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens (RTBG) is a significant heritage site, the garden areas are of botanical and horticultural significance and must be protected at all times.
All activities within the Gardens are subject to and must comply with the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens Act 2002, available at www.thelaw.tas.gov.au.

Privacy Policy
Your personal information will be used for the purpose of hiring a venue or location at the Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens. The personal information will be managed in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Act 2004.
Access
- Our opening hours are 8:00 am – 6:30 pm from October to March, and 8:00 am – 5:00 pm from April to September. The site is locked at closing time unless otherwise approved.
- Vehicles are prohibited in the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens unless they have been approved, and a vehicle permit, and induction have been issued (essential vehicles only).
- Parking is available at both entrances and the overflow car park located on Lower Domain Road. Please observe Council parking signage.
- The Hirer or their designated representative must complete an onsite induction before occupying the site. The Hirer must also ensure that all on-site workers comply with the guidelines and conditions specified in the induction.
- Security - If the event is outside operating hours, security is required to be organised in conjunction with RTBG, at a cost to the Hirer.
- The Gardens are open to the public and while all effort is made to make an area exclusive, there is a potential that visitors to the Gardens may encroach on this space.
- Any keys or swipe cards required, will be issued on the day of induction. All keys and swipe cards must be signed back in on the last day onsite. In the event of missing keys/cards, cost of replacement keys/cards and rekeying will be the responsibility of the Hirer.
Alcohol and Catering
- Room Hire – The onsite restaurant is the exclusive food and beverage provider, external caterers are not permitted. You may bring in tea and coffee supplies, hot water is available.
- Weddings and Events – The preferred food and beverage provide is the onsite caterer. External caterers or BYO requires approval.
- It is the hirers responsibility to obtain all necessary permits, licences and approvals to conduct the event. If you are selling alcohol at the event you must have a Special Permit from the Liquor and Gaming office.
- Lighting fires and using fire-fuelled cooking equipment, such as wood-fired pizza ovens and charcoal BBQs, are not permitted without prior written approval.
Cleaning and Care
- Hirer accepts liability for any damage to property and the cost of rectifying it, caused by your party.
- The Hirer is responsible for waste management. Although general waste and recycling bins are available throughout the Garden, we request that you or your caterer take your rubbish with you upon departure. General waste and recycling bins can be provided at an additional cost.
- Wastewater and waste oil must be contained and removed and disposed of appropriately.
- Ensure the site is clean during the event and suitable for public access the next day. If not, the venue may hire professional cleaners at the Hirer's expense.
- Confetti, rice, petals, releasing of balloons are not permitted at the Gardens unless approval has been arranged.
- Out of hours servicing of toilets is not provided by the venue, this is the responsibility of the Hirer.
- Respect the gardens, please refrain from standing or walking in garden beds, picking plants, and climbing trees.
Other (Furniture, Décor, Equipment, Entertainment, Photography)
- Do not attempt to operate or interfere with any reticulation, electrical, mechanical, or heating plant and equipment in the Gardens without prior written approval.
- Electrical appliances used in the venue are required to be electrically tested and tagged. If additional power is required, the Hirer should seek advice from an electrician, at your own cost.
- Garden furniture may not be moved unless approved by RTBG.
- Marquees or fixtures require prior approval and need to be weighted (not staked).
- Flying of drones is permitted for commercial activity but not permitted for private bookings such as weddings. Written approval must be granted by RTBG prior to flying.
- A photography permit is mandatory for all events or commercial productions, with written approval required from RTBG. Wedding photography is subject to a fee; please refer to the wedding pack or quote for details regarding what is included.
- During operating hours, please be mindful of the serenity of the gardens and keep noise to a minimum within your designated area.
Cancellation Policy
- More than 30 days: Date changes are permitted; cancellation will forfeit any fees paid.
- Less than 30 days: Date changes or cancellations will forfeit any fees paid.
Safety, Emergency and Risk Management
- In case of emergency do not hesitate to call 000 and notify the RTBG contact immediately. Until further notice, follow instruction provided by RTBG onsite wardens.
- The Director reserves the right to suspend, change the location of, or cancel an event for any duration deemed necessary if, in the Director's reasonable opinion, it is necessary due to:
- the condition of the event area,
- weather conditions leading up to and including the event period,
- the protection or safety of the Gardens, the event, its guests, and the public.
Guidelines for Floristry
A strict plant quarantine is currently in effect at RTBG to prevent the spread of Myrtle Rust.
ANY PLANT MATERIAL BROUGHT INTO THE GARDENS MUST BE SOURCED FROM A CERTIFIED FLORIST.
Please forward this to your preferred florist if you intend to bring any plant materials into the Botanical Garden grounds. The following plants are banned from entering the Gardens under any circumstances. All members of the Myrtaceae plant family are potential hosts of myrtle rust, including:
- Gum trees (Eucalyptus)
- Red Dragon, Black Stallion, Rainbow's End, Krinkly (Lophomyrtus)
- Bottlebrush (Callistemon, Melaleuca)
- Tea tree (Leptospermum)
- Lilly pilly (Syzygium, Acmena, Waterhousea)
- Paperbark (Melaleuca)
- Myrtle (Backhousia)
- Chilean guava (Myrtus or Ugni)
- Midyim (Austromyrtus)
- Rose apple (Syzygium)
- Brush box (Lophostemon)
- New Zealand Christmas bush (Metrosideros)
